About Us - Maroof Institute Africa

Why the focus on family?

The family is the building block of society and the foundation of every nation. The home is the first school, where children should learn right from wrong, develop their character, and receive guidance, knowledge, love and moral values.

The family is often a person’s closest and most beloved source of support. It therefore has a profound role in shaping individuals and, ultimately, society itself.

For the Prophet Muhammad (ص), the teaching and practice of the Qur’an and Sunnah began within the home. This responsibility is reflected throughout the Qur’an in the examples of the families of Ibrahim, Imran, Musa, Yusuf and Ya‘qub (ع), among others. Isa (ع), according to Islamic and biblical accounts, is presented differently in this regard: he had a mother and a lineage of forefathers, but no known wife or children.

Allah (عز وجل) says in the Quran Surah Tahreem 66:6: Oh you who believe save yourselves and your families…

Why the Prophet Muhammad’s (ص) family?

It is narrated in Ibn Majah 1977 via Ibn Abbas, and in Tirmidhi 3895 via Aisha, that the Prophet Muhammad (ص) said:

The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family“

It is narrated in Muslim’s Saheeh 2408a [English] in the book of the merits of the companions that the Prophet said:

O people I am leaving among you two important things, the one being the Book of Allah in which there is right guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah, and the members of my family (Ahlul Bayt). I remind you by Allah about the members of my family, I remind you by Allah about the members of my family, I remind you by Allah about the members of my family.

Family Foundations.

No one practices ‘how to save and guide the family’ like the Prophet Muhammad (ص), and what better place to start looking at good family relationships, and how to save your family, than with the Ahlul Bayt, the family institute of the Prophet Muhammad (ص).

Based on the above understanding, Quranic scriptures and utterances of the Prophet with regards to the salvation and well-being of the family, the purpose of the Maroof Institute is founded. The full name for the organisation is Maroof Aale Rasool Institute (MARI) ‘that which is recognised of good regarding the family of the messenger (of Allah)’. The short form is Maroof Institute, or simply Maroof. It is founded out of gratitude, love, honour and remembrance of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad (ص).

Maroof Institute also recognises, admires, and is guided by the good words and upright conduct of other historical figures, such as the Sahaba. It further appreciates contemporary personalities, be they male or female, who live ethically according to the principles of Islam in light of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ص).
