Land as a lasting community investment.
Support a Lasting Legacy of Sadaqah Jariyah
Maroof Institute is seeking land in The Gambia to establish a charitable, educational and community-focused one-stop centre serving individuals and families. Our aim is to promote goodness through Tarbiyyah and Tabligh, while providing opportunities for education, research, welfare, community support and ethical development.
We believe there is a growing need for a trusted centre where people can access beneficial services in one place. Our long-term vision includes facilities that can support Islamic education, community activities, family welfare, women’s support, charitable initiatives, research and other services that benefit the wider community.
We are looking for land to be donated
We are particularly interested in land where:
- The land is genuine and authentic, with clear ownership.
- The person offering the land is legitimately the legal owner and has the authority to donate it.
- The owner is willing to donate the land freely, without requiring payment, for the charitable and Islamic purposes set out by Maroof Institute.
- The land is suitable for the development of a long-term community centre and related charitable facilities.
- The land should preferably be a relatively flat, usable plot, ideally measuring no less than 25 × 25 meters, to allow sufficient space for the planned facilities and future development.
We also welcome donations, financial support, professional assistance and other contributions from members of the public who would like to help make this vision possible.
Donating land for a beneficial Islamic project can be an opportunity for Sadaqah Jariyah — an ongoing charity whose reward continues through the benefit it creates. A piece of land can become a place where people learn, worship, receive support, gather as a community and benefit for generations.
The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said:
“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
— Muslim, 1631
5 Reasons why dedicating land as a religious waqf can be preferable to using it purely for private residential purposes:
- Land that caters to families, not just one family — Land as a permanent community asset rather than benefiting only one household.
- Ongoing reward (ṣadaqah jāriyah) — In Islamic tradition, beneficial waqf can provide continuing reward to the people who support the establishment of it, as long as people continue to benefit from it.
- Community services — Waqf land can support women and family services, and accommodation for vulnerable people. It may also be able to provide other beneficial facilities and services such as utilities for the wider community and construction of shared walkways/paths.
- Access to educational resources — Instead of the land serving one private residence, its use can benefit a wider section of the community, including people who have limited access to educational or religious resources such as a Masjid, or Madrasa/Dara.
- Preserving a lasting legacy — Properly structured waqf can protect the intended purpose of the land over generations, creating a physical institution that continues to serve the community beyond the founder’s lifetime.
If you know someone in The Gambia who is considering gifting land for an Islamic or charitable purpose, please put them in touch with us.
We look forward to hearing from you and, Allah willing, working together to create something that continues to benefit individuals, families and the wider community for generations to come.
